On the 2nd of January 2013, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) started to accept the applications for permanent residence under the Federal Skilled Trade Program with some terms and conditions.
Trade certification in Canada is under provincial jurisdiction. The provincial certificate is difficult most of the time to obtain from outside of Canada. This program is very beneficial for the trade persons who get an approved offer of employment from a recognized employer. In Canada, not all the trades are regulated in all of the provinces. An offer of employment becomes mandatory where a trade is not regulated.
An applicant should have sufficient language proficiency in one of Canada”s official languages. Applicants should have his/ her basic command of the English or French language with the abilities to speak, listening, reading, and writing. Only the CIC designated testing agency’s result will be considered. The two most popular language tests are the IELTS for English and the TEF for French.
The followings are the scores required in each language ability respectively:
Speaking | Listening | Reading | Writing | |
IELTS | 5.0 | 5.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
TEF | 225 | 180 | 121 | 181 |
CIC accepts a maximum of 3000 applications in the Federal Skilled Trade Class each Year.
